Here is how to replicate this behaviour. Create a folder with a really long name. Drag the current Thunar window to the side of the display so it resizes to half the screen vertically.
Now if you navigate into the folder with a name longer than the available space in the thunar window, it resizes the side pane to fit the folder name. But you can resize the pane manually.
