I had the same problem.

It seems that when I choose a color in the control panel it writes something 
like:
rgb(78,154,6) in the primary color field of the scheme 
org.gnome.desktop.background

Changing this by any hexdecimal number fix the problem.

It is worth to be mentionned that I installed the gnome3 ppa before
removing it with the ppa-purge command. I don't know if the problem was
present before this or not.
