I got the same problem today: The trackpoint and the related two buttons were not working after boot. My laptop is ThinkPad T430u running kernel 3.8.0-19-generic on Ubuntu 13.04 - amd64.
When I use "xinput list", neither the trackpoint nor the extra button is in the result.
