It looks like you had a customised version of /etc/mysql/my.cnf. Perhaps this
is why errors are not being logged to /var/log/mysql.
Please could you make sure to purge all the mysql related packages and then
install again? If you still have a problem, please then attach the
/var/log/mysql/error.log file. If the file doesn't exist, please start by
checking that /etc/mysql/my.cnf matches what is supplied by the package.
Once done, please change the bug status back to New. Or if this turns
out to be a local misconfiguration, please change the bug status to
Invalid.
