Hi there. I actually already tried the mainline kernel (I tacked that in
at the end of the original post). :) Unfortunately it didn't make a
difference and acted 100% identical to the 3.8 kernel from the regular
Ubuntu install.

On the flip side, a user on the UbuntuForums just gave me a suggestion
and it helped. Now my brightness controls work just fine. I had to add
the acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\ entry in the grub file.

Steps:

1) gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
2) change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

to read

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\""

3) sudo update-grub

Now it works fine! Is this something that could somehow be integrated
into the system by default? A quick Google search of this yielded quite
a number of results in the last year with various laptop models where
users had to add that entry. Thanks for any info!
