I also get this error, and I'm running 12.04 as well. The message repeats 16 times and the Gpointing Device Settings opens, when issuing the command.
Unlike Jeremy (Comment 4), I can save settings. Only thing off for me is that the trackpad is still very fast though it's at the slowest setting. Not sure if this is related to the error or not. Also, in case this is helpful, It shows settings for Logitech USB Optical Mouse (the mouse I'm using), PS/2 Mouse, and AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint (my trackpad). Also, I'm using a Toshiba Portege R100, in case this is helpful as well.
