My apologies - when I saw you suggested the mainline kernel I had assumed you were referencing the mainline 3.9 kernel, which was something somebody suggested to me here on Launchpad with an unrelated bug about a week ago. I did not realize this was the Saucy 3.10 kernel that you were recommending. Anyway, I installed it. I also adjusted my grub config line back to default to test.
With Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit and kernel 3.8 with default grub config file, brightness controls did not work. With Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit and kernel 3.8 with modified grub config file from post #5 above, brightness controls worked fine. With Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit and kernel 3.10 from mainline Saucy with default grub config file, brightness controls worked fine. On the 3.10 kernel I also closed my laptop lid to send the system into suspend mode and resumed it by opening the lid. Even then my brightness controls worked fine. Thanks for your insight!
