It is indeed useful.

I wish the kernel version was more representative of the real kernel version 
though.
As it is now, it is very misleading and confusing.

It can also lead to users incorrectly reporting the wrong kernel version
when having trouble which may lead to further confusion and make
diagnosing problems more difficult.

Most users, even technical users are likely to believe their system
really is running 3.8.0 since that is what it actually claims, despite
it really running 3.8.11.
