I've been upgrading all along, and the last kernel to work without
nomodeset on my computer was 3.2x (Ubuntu 12.04). After that Kernel 3.5
(Ubuntu 12.10) and kernel 3.8 (ubuntu 13.04) only gives black boot
screen without nomodeset. I now downgraded kernel for raring to 3.2 to
temp solve this problem. Seems like a regression.
Computer is a standard hp6910p with a radeon 2300.
