Public bug reported:

After an update, I restarted my system only to find that the audio
headphones were not working in latest kernel, 3.8.0-21-generic. I
unplugged them and the integrated speakers were also not working. It's
my first bug to report and I'm not sure how to do this. The bug is
really similar to the stated here: http://askubuntu.com/q/294016/47254
and therefore similar (not sure if equal) to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1169761

However, it has some differences:

When I play anything anywhere, it just does not work. Not audio jack nor
integrated speakers. I followed the instructions in that AskUbuntu
question, choosing an older kernel through the GRUB and now the audio is
working perfectly for me in the kernel 3.8.0-19-generic . In the newer (
3.8.0-21-generic ) it would only list Dummy output in System
Settings->Sound->Output->Play sound through, and not even the "Test
sound" would work.

I know this report is incomplete, please tell me which commands to run
(to write the output here) to check the errors in a basic way. I will
try with HDMI in a few hours when I get back home.

Workaround:

- Reboot and in GRUB select Advanced options (how to boot into grub:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1565450)

- Chose Ubuntu with older kernel

Version: Ubuntu 13.04
Laptop model: Sony Vaio VPCEH13FX
Audio: IntelĀ® High Definition Audio (specs
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/VPCEH13FXL_mksp.pdf )
