Public bug reported:
When I connect my XPS 13 (12.04 fully patched) to an external monitor
via mini display port, I can mirror and extend no problem.
However, when I disconnect the monitor the laptop display blanks and
does not come back on.
I tried turning off the external monitor in system prefs before
disconnecting but no change.
Oddly I can get the laptop display back on if I reconnect the external
display, even though it will not show anything.
The only way out seems to be a restart.
