Actually, I had 3d Acceleration turned on.

I was using Gnome Shell 3.8 as well, so without some kind of video
Acceleration, it would not start the desktop.

Mouse Integration Disabled: True
3D Acceleration: False
2D Acceleration: True

Now the Guest OS (Ubuntu 13.04 with Gnome Shell 3.8) has a working mouse
cursor.
