I have been fighting this problem for a while, applying the latest
patches and kernel updates only made the system so unstable it was
unusable.

Booting the base image from a USB startup disk, the system booted up and
shutdown without error. That being the case, I did a complete reinstall,
formatting the OS partitions. The system is now stable with error free
boot and shutdown operations. The display driver in use is the Nouveau
which was installed by default. By having /home on a seperate spindle,
all data was preserved without loss. Like Grant, I now am a happy
camper.
