I had the same problem and I fixed it by using the Linux rescue disk and
use GParted tool in it to make the Ubuntu Partition Primary (And
therefore bootable; Logical partitions ARE NOT bootable if that’s where
Ubuntu is sitting!?). Some of the guides misguide on this(don’t remember
which!) GRUB also needs to be installed on a Primary Partition( or it
will screw up the Ubuntu boot up from the Hard drive).

The error occurs on the Tecra S3 Laptop right after the first reboot, 
when Unbuntu 7.04 Live CD has completed the install and tells you to 
remove the disk and reboot.  The system will come up on its own and then 
hangs at that point.
