options snd-hda-intel model=intel-X58 I also found a pagehttp://goinggnu.wordpress.com/2007/07/31/how-to-set- up-surround-51-audio-in-linux-with-alsa/ which I followed and created a new*~/.asoundrc *file. The combination of the two has my sound back to perfect [where it was under 11.04. Question....since it is fine now, I don't want to just erase the line you suggest, unless there is some logic to it. Somewhere else, it told me to put my actual chip by name [listed in an AlSA chip list], which I did. Sound is now fine, but it was NOT after upgrade from 11.04 via 11.10 why would one remove the line, rather than make it reflect the actual chip?
