Yes. I killed the previous instances before starting a new one. I also found the cure: ATI fglrx drivers thought that I have another screen attached even though I don't have one. I created a new xorg.conf with just the device and identifier line for the fglrx section.
Now Xorg no longer thinks that I have another screen. As an added bonus firefox and thunderbird start up fine! Not sure if this should be filed as a bug...
