Very much appreciated. This is quite embarrassing, but a reboot solved the problem.
I think I jumped the gun because the various suggestions I tried got simply refused to work. Everything seemed to show up OK, but still no sound. Ah well, I have learned my lesson. In my defence, however, this is very un-Linux behaviour!
