Hi Joseph Thanks for your message, however, I'm a little wary to try out an upstream kernel in case my system fails to boot...I'm simply not sufficiently knowlegeable in linux to know how to rectify the situation if that should happen, sorry. I would otherwise be happy to try it. Of course, if you can give clear instructions on what to do in case of problems then I can certainly give it a go.
It's difficult to say if the problem is related to sound or not, as I've been experiencing all sorts of failures anyway -- e.g. system fails to start (no login box, just black screen with blinking cursor), fails to shut down (hangs) - even without a sound problem. I tried adding the ppa for xfce given at #19 for Bug #1104435 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-session/+bug/1104435) but this did not fix my start-up issue and I guess this means I will continue to get shut down failures too. Presumably, therefore, the problem lies in the kernel itself --- so it's worth trying out the latest version as you suggest, but I just need your clear instructions... In case the above start-up/shut-down problems sound like another bug you might be aware of, then please let me know...I should like to be a subscriber to that if it exists.
