Update:

My problems never sorted themselves out. If I were a more savvy Linux
user I might have been able to solve the boot problem (caused, I think,
by inadvertently deleting kernels when I was also inadvertently running
an older kernel because of Grub Customizer).

I ended up downloading and installing Raring (Xubuntu). So far, the
computer is quicker and Suspend is quicker. I've had no problems  and
I've already used the feature half a dozen times without rebooting.

Other factors that might come into play: I've avoided installing any
other desktops by *not* installing alternate file managers like Nautilus
or Nemo.
