While I get that this is "cleaner" in Grub2 (Ubuntu, advanced options),
it's not useful at all.  The choice of what to display should be left up
to the user, and the config for grub2 is not nearly as user friendly as
it used to be.

I'd propose the two patches found at:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1078788#p1078788  (Plus the
modification to /etc/default/grub) which I have updated for Ubuntu.
I've patched several computers and currently use this on all of them
with no issues.
