I stumbled on a fix and increased the systems inotyfy watches by entering the 
following line to /etc/sysctl.conf:  fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 262144 .
I believe the default value is about 8000, and the above mentioned increase, 
with a slim increase in memory usage, cured all problems. The maintainer, Mr. 
Seabastian Bacher's advice to post this bug upstream (Gnome) is appreciated, 
but for time being I will not do so as this appears to be a kernel issue, after 
all.
