I'm also hitting this bug, with an up-to-date 12.04 64bit install.
Sometimes sound works, but about half the time as soon as the first
application tries to play sound (I'm testing with Rhythmbox and the
"Test sound" button in the sound settings), the logs get bombed by
hundereds of lines like:
[ 525.553067] ca0106: unstable DMA pointer!
usually after a second or two the machine locks up and I have to hard-
reset it.
I'm playing sound via the IEC958 optical out. This only started
happening in the last month or so.
