Different compiler versions and the associated libraries have different
ABIs and/or API; it is *not* an alternative for the system compiler.
Usually you can select the compiler explicitely by using
CC=gcc-X.Y CXX=gcc-X.Y ./configure ...
make CC=gcc-X.Y CXX=gcc-X.Y
