My machine is indeed a 64-bit machine (Athlon X2-4800) and I understand
that my best option may be to run the 64-bit version of Kubuntu.
However, one specific application I need to run is missing an important
part in the 64-bit edition. For that reason, I was hoping to get the
32-bit edition of Kubuntu running.

If this other application, which is not a prepackaged Ubuntu app, more
fully supports 64-bit Linux (which may already be the case, I don't have
the latest version of it), I agree with your implication that running
the 64-bit version of Kubuntu may be the best option.
