Ok about my problem with the display drivers: This seems to be a very common problem for newer versions Ubuntu > 12.10. The problem seems to be caused by the new version of xserver: http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/10/amd-catalyst-legacy-driver-still-doesnt.html
