I also have a MacBook Pro 15" Core2Duo (mine is from november 2006, I'm not sure about yours).
applesmc is loaded automagically at startup (which is great). The laptop is also very hot sometimes, it comes from the ATI GPU (Radeon X1600 Mobility), which oddly doesn't support powersaving under Linux. At the moment, there is nothing we can do about that. ATI/AMD is aware of the situation and does nothing (see http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3130 for the semi-official explanation). After your upgrade from feisty to gutsy, have you also updated your linux kernel image to 2.6.22 ? (the package is linux-image-2.6.22-*). I remember I had to do it manually in my case.
