Thanks, I'll try that now. I tried using the 'noapic' parameter, which caused my system to repeatedly halt until I hit the power button, which then caused the boot process to advance a step or two. After successfully booting, the system freezes completely (i.e. even `watch` doesn't respond) until I move the mouse. I don't know if this information helps, but it's certainly interesting!
