For maximal strangeness, it would appear that this card somehow interferes with my sound card: while it is installed, I get a very peculiar "atiixp: codec read timeout" error on boot, and my sound card is not visible in the configuration pane. Unfortunately, since that's an onboard sound device, I can't try the reverse (i.e., removing the sound card) to see whether that affects the functionality of the SATA controller.
