Ok, I managed to recreate it once this morning running Gutsy Herd 3
(from the CD) by shutting down all net related stuff, copying leases
from HD installed Feisty then restarting all the net services. I'll try
it a couple of more times to be sure. On restarting network-manager I
note a few things crashing which don't on Feisty, I'll need to
investigate those further.

Have network-manager, ifupdown, etc changed much since Herd 3 is it
worth trying with a daily live?
