Using Optimus should be possible in the currently under-development Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy Salamander", but the open-source nouveau driver still has poor power management so you might still have short battery life and high heat, in which case a better option might be to disable the nvidia card as described in comments #13 and #14 at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/876854
