Public bug reported:

In the Bitstream Vera Sans Mono font family, some characters,
particularly the "m", are a different width from others, throwing off
the alignment of multiple lines of monospaced text using the font. For
example, in the Roman style at size 12, the "m" character is wider than
others, so it skews lines to the right, while at size 13 it is narrower
than others and skews lines to the left.

And in the Bold Oblique style at size 12 the "m" and "x" characters are
both wider than others, so they skew lines to the right, while at size
13 the "i" character is also wider than others, skewing lines to the
right.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. start gedit;
2. go to Edit > Preferences > Fonts & Colors;
3. uncheck the "Use the system fixed width font" checkbox;
4. press the "Editor font" button;
5. in the "Pick the editor font" dialog, select "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono" from
the Family list, "Roman" from the Style list, and "12" from the size list;
6. close the "Pick the editor font" and Preferences dialogs;
7. enter the following text into a text document:

mmmmmx
qqqqqx
iiiiix
xxxxxx

Expected results: the final "x" characters on all four lines are
vertically aligned.

Actual result: the final "x" characters on the last three lines are
vertically aligned, but the first, on the line with "m" characters, is
skewed to the right of the others.

Additional information:

I originally noticed this bug in Edgy, and I still see it since
upgrading to Feisty. It's not specific to gedit, since I also see it in
Komodo. The DejaVu Sans Mono font family, which appears to be exactly
the same as Bitstream Vera Sans Mono, seems mostly immune from these
problems, although it too has issues in Bold Oblique style.
