I can confirm that on Ubunutu, USB keys behave as reported by Hugh. I have a Transcend USB key. After performing 'eject' and umount operations, the activity light on the usb key stays on. This does not happen on Windows XP. The USB key manual mentions that it is unsafe to remove the drive if the light is on.
