@2nv2u: fwiw, I suspect my Xid errors and crashes were being caused by poor quality nVidia hardware. I think the frequency of the errors did drop with later nvidia drivers, but I didn't stop getting them altogether until I tried a BIOS that reduced the voltage for 3d operations to the nvidia card (this is apparently a common problem with my nvidia 540M hardware when it's under stress). Having said that, I ran into the errors when I was running intensive 3d gaming applications, and it sounds like you are having problems with normal 2d operations, which shouldn't stress the card at all.
