im very sorry for your weird experience indeed; but you really seems
having oldish settings around, messing your system: i mean, those
settings inside either .gconf, .local, .gnome2, .config inside your
/home (ctrl+h to unhide). Rename these folders and reboot to know if
that problem still persist. As i know no one else have reported your
issue, the 8800gt fully works with the nvidia-319-updates driver.
