Hi. The output from the terminal command you gave me is:

The old BIOS version was 0704 and its build date was 05/19/09.

After updating the BIOS, I shut down the system and rebooted. Then I
tried to run Thunderbird and the system crashed. After a cold boot, I
tried to run Thunderbird again, and this time it ran. Then I was also
able to load Firefox from a link in Thunderbird, which the system would
do sometimes with the old BIOS, but rarely.

Right now it is hard to say whether or not updating the BIOS helped at
all, but it does not look like it solved the problem entirely since
Thunderbird crashed as soon as I tried to load it after the new BIOS was
installed.
