I discovered that although the paste option is grayed out and seems to
be disabled, in reallity the option can still be used. This means that
the problem is rather a duplicate of Bug #948076 ("nautilus usable
options sometimes grayed out in right click menu"). As described there,
a similar problem sometimes happens with the rename option.
