OP reported similar problem using nvidia drivers, even though I have the same 
problem using fglrx.  
Several users reported that enabling display compositing works to stop the 
artifacts, I can confirm this on Debian Wheezy.

The problem was apparently fixed on Oneiric's release, which is good.  I
suppose this can be marked as closed?
