Thanks for your bugreport.
One problem is certainly that vmware does some prompting (something that
it rather should avoid). But the other problem is that synaptic (the
backend of gnome-app-install) did not expand the terminal in that case.
It should do this after 120s of inactivity on the terminal window. Did
you waited that long?
