I would just like to add that I followed the instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume
in the section "Suspending from text mode".

Meaning that I booted with no_console_suspend, went into VT1, and did
sudo pm-suspend. The laptop suspended and resumed with no trouble. Then
I did it again, and just like suspending from the power manager, it
didn't successfully suspend. I had to hold down the power key to power
down, and then turn the computer back on to reboot.

I am unsure what else to try, so I'll wait patiently for input. I went to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
but that seems to be instructions for debugging the *resume*. I am having
trouble getting it to suspend, so I wasn't sure if that would be useful.
