Thanks.  Actually, the 3D effects work with the xorg-video-intel driver,
but I get a much worse display otherwise (fuzziness, poor color
resolution described in the first comment--should that be a separate
bug?).  I tried installing that .deb with the test kernel (thanks), but
the symptoms are the same.

I have exactly the package versions you list, except my 915resolution is
0.5.3-0ubuntu1 instead of 0.5.2-10ubuntu2.

"I'm not really sure what you mean about not having /etc/X11/xorg.conf"

I've got nothing at that path.  I ran into some problems while switching
between i810 and intel drivers, and deleted it.  X seems to work fine
without one.  I'll try yours, thanks.
