hi there,

same problems here - thinkpad t42p laptop, ATI FireGL Mobility T2, kernel
2.6.21, xorg server, fglrx module, vmware.
i'm using debian unstable, so yes, i'm wrong here, but i think it's the same
problem.

not only firefox, but also gnome-panel, gnome-terminal, and rdesktop
lose their connections.

i can confirm the very first statement in this thread: applications lose their
connections if they are under "heavy x load":
- gnome-terminal: "dd ... | buffer | dd". This updates the terminal display
quickly. otherwise quite stable
- gnome-panel: probably the load indicator
- rdesktop: probably with large update requests
- firefox: probably while rendering complex pages

i'm running vmware on this system. if using ssh with x11 forwarding into
vmware, the problem occurs more often than with good old telnet +
DISPLAY x11 redirection. again, this underlines the first statement,
that the problem appears under a certain load.

no useful error message in ~/.xsession-errors. have not found any other
useful log file.

i haven't had this problem until a new fresh installation on the same hardware
(some weeks ago). the most important change was the kernel from 2.6.11 to
2.6.21.
xorg (the whole system) is updated frequently. debian unstable has never been a
problem before.

could it be a problem related to laptop time sources (with frequency
scaling) with 2.6.21 kernels + ati driver + new xorg servers?

i'm trying xwininfo+xev, not using the ondemand governor, probably switching
back to vesa or open source ati drivers.
does anyone know a useful x11 connection proxy? something like strace for x11
connections? just to get a hint what goes wrong there.
