Hi, I have exactly the same problem on my Toshiba Satellite R830.
This is with a fully up-to-date Opensuse 12.3. The solution in comment 5 restores the brightness but the function keys still don't work (well they do show the "on-screen brightness display" changing but with no effect on the actual brightness). Using (as root) echo 4539 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness restores my screen to its full brightness and passing different lower values dims the screen.
