In order to try to debug this problem, I started all over again. The only (I think) difference is that before I started the install with an older BIOS version, when this failed I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version and rebooted. Then it failed again.
I now thus start the install with the latest BIOS version. It all went nice and smooth. I now have Ubuntu 64b 13.04 installed next to W7 64b Both run smoothly.
