on the broken machines the syslog also has these statements:

Sep 11 16:29:46 vm2 rpc.idmapd[601]: nss_getpwnam: name '[email protected]' domain 
'my.com': resulting localname '5000'
Sep 11 16:29:46 vm2 rpc.idmapd[601]: nss_getpwnam: name '5000' not found in 
domain 'my.com'

so whatever is broken is causing a lookup by uid rather than username.
