Unfortunately I can't try a new kernel on my machine, anyway I tried to replicate the same problem using malloc + memset. I know it's trivial but in this way I can avoid using complex softwares like R or MATLAB. Given the 'top' stops refreshing once my RAM is full I cannot see if the system uses swap space correctly.
