The problem shows here at the top: UPSTART_EVENTS = sm-notify: error while loading shared libraries: libtirpc.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory But I don't know how that would happen; your apt log shows that the libtirpc1 package has been successfully configured before the upgrade tries to start statd. And the rest of the log shows that statd apparently *did* start without errors on a subsequent attempt, and since then has restarted successfully several times. The only explanation that comes to mind would be if you had a previous copy of nfs-utils installed on your system, that didn't come from the package.
