I had problems getting my trackpoint on a thinkpad R31 run with the same
problems and was a problem with the intel chipset and newer linux
kernels.
Giving a kernel parmeter did it: "i8042.nomux=1"
Edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst
Go to the line that starts with "# kopt= ... " and add "i8042.nomux=1" to the
END.
