For Gutsy we will be including a display configuration GUI tool which will make it easier to fix xorg.conf files. However, the issue that this was not automatically detected is still valid (sounds related to bug 3731).
If you can doublecheck that it still occurs with the Gutsy Live CD, that would be helpful.
