I just tried linux- image-3.12.0-031200rc1-generic_3.12.0-031200rc1.201309161735_i386.deb last night and it has the same issue. Interestingly, vlc doesn't respond to the remote but this does not immediately cause the kernel panic, not until I startup totem, but that may have been because infrared capability was not on (on vlc).
