I am confused. I used alsamixer to play with the settings for the "Capture" item. Setting it to L 0 R 100 or L 100 R 0 gave me clearish but quiet sound. I have now set it to L 100 R 100 and the sound is still clear, and perfect! I don't understand what I've changed so that everything now works as I expect.
